DID YOU KNOW……………………
Language/Ethnic Makeup
Cubans speak Spanish as a first language. Some Cuban-Americans are also fluent in English. About one-forth of Cubans are a mix of European and African lineage; and some two-thirds are descendants of white Europeans, mainly from Spain.
Spiritual Affiliations
Americans of Cuban descent overwhelmingly identify themselves as Roman Catholics. Almost 80 percent of those born in Cuba and 64 percent of those born in the United States are Catholics. Santeria – which translates as “devotion to the saints” – is still practiced by some. It combines West African traditions and Catholicism.
Cultural Considerations
Being generous and hospitable is highly valued. It is considered rude not to greet every man with a handshake and every woman with a kiss on the cheek. Touching as a demonstration of affection is widely accepted. Lack of eye contact shows disrespect.
Music is an important part of Cuban culture.
Elders are often consulted on health and other important matters.
The leading cause of death among Cubans are cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. Life expectancy is 76 years for men; 80 years for women.
Food Origin
Cuban cuisine has been influenced by Spanish, French, African, Chinese and Portuguese cultures.
